Ways to Speed Up Scar Healing

If you have a recent scar, you understandably want to see it fade as soon as possible. You have little control over your body’s healing process but there are some steps you can take to encourage it. Here are some ways in which you can speed up scar healing.

Get Enough Rest

The Journal of Applied Psychology recently put out research suggesting that getting more sleep will help your wounds heal faster. The study involved participants who only slept for three hours at night versus those who got at least eight. The results? Sleep restriction leads to higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, delaying healing time by a day when compared with people who slept longer. The conclusion is this: get into a healthy sleeping routine for a speedy scar recovery.

Eat Well

The same study as above also revealed that nutritional supplements can boost the immune response, when coupled with good amounts of sleep. Why? Healthy foods such as fruits and veggies fuel your body and in turn, hasten the wound healing process.

Reach for foods rich in nutrients and vitamins, including copper, zinc and vitamin A. You can’t go wrong with dark, leafy greens such as baby spinach, kale and Swiss chard. You’ll also want to try ginger, mushrooms, beets and yogurt — all known to speed the healing process along.

Keep Active

Follow a regular exercise routine. It doesn’t have to be long-duration, high-intensity workouts every day. Moderate exercise is fine, such as a walk around the block. You just want to increase blood flow to the wound, which speeds healing. Plus, exercise has numerous other benefits, such as cardiovascular benefits and weight loss.

Don’t Smoke

Cigarettes slow down the healing process, as it increases the risk of complications like infections.

Keep the Wound Clean

Even as the wound is starting to clear up, clean it every day and re-dress the area until your doctor tells you to stop. Your skin requires good amounts of moisture and warm temperatures in order to heal right.

Use Scarfade

A silicone scar gel is a must if you want to speed up the healing process of your scar. It’s best to apply it twice a day as recommended for your type and size of scar. You’ll notice a difference in weeks, where your scar will be faded and not as noticeable. Have a couple of tubes on hand so you never forget to apply. Routine consistency is the key to success.
