What is a scar ?
Scars are the physiological healing result of any trauma to the skin where the dermis (deep layer) of the skin has been injured. During the healing process special healing cells called Fibroblasts migrate to the site of injury.

These Fibroblasts cover the damaged area and form collagen which is the building block of scar tissue. Normally, collagen fibers line up in a parallel fashion like spaghetti in a package, forming a bridge across the wound. This collagen material is constantly remodeling for almost two years. Sometime in the first two years, this bridge of collagen tissue will gradually contract and pull the edges of the wound tightly together. This process results in a scar that is flat and very thin. The scar then becomes dormant.

An abnormal scar occurs when too much scar tissue is produced or the collagen fibers lay down in disarray much like cooked spaghetti. These hypertrophic (and keloid) scars are reddish and raised. They can itch and cause pain in the worst cases.

What is Scarfade® ?
Scarfade® is an FDA registered product consisting of a unique blend of medical grade silicones. Biologically inert, it is extremely safe to use (usage instructions). It is applied topically to the scar after the skin has closed and is actively healing. Reduction in the size and intensity of the scar is typically observed within 2 weeks.

How does Scarfade® work?

Medical silicone products have been used for years (see studies) for scar treatment. They are a very successful and well documented therapy in the treatment of scars. Until recently these products were very difficult to use. Scarfade® gel is an alternative that offers ease of use in a safe effective format. The proposed theoretical mechanism that has evolved in clinical and laboratory studies suggest that Scarfade® works by causing a favorable shift in the production of growth factors (TGF, FGF) involved in dermal regeneration. This shift reduces the over secretion of collagen. Scarfade® theoretically regulates the growth factors leading to a reduction in the size and intensity of excessive scars.

How long should Scarfade® be used?

Scarfade® should be used for 12-16 weeks or until changes in the size and intensity of the scar is no longer observed. It should be applied twice a day, morning and evening. Reapplication may be necessary if the area is washed. (see usage instructions)

How much Scarfade® do I need for my scar?

The standard ½ oz. tube of Scarfade® can provide up to 300 applications on a three inch scar. The recommended length of treatment is 12-16 weeks with twice a day applications. If your scar is larger, 1 oz. tubes are also available for purchase.

How old can my scar be to use Scarfade® successfully?

Scars actively heal for about two years. During the healing process Fibroblasts cover the damaged area and form collagen which is the building block of scar tissue. Theroretically Scarfade is only effective during this two year active period, however we have had customers claim success on older scars.

Is Scarfade® safe for use on Children?

Scarfade® is easily tolerated by children and can be worn 24 hours a day. It washes off with soap and water and can be reapplied as soon as the skin is dry.

Can Scarfade® be used on the face?

Scarfade® is safe for use on the face but should not be put in contact with the eyes or mucous membranes.

Are there any side effects associated with Scarfade®?

There are no known side effects associated with Scarfade®.

What is Laserfade®?

Laserfade® is formulated to help reduce the appearance of red skin resulting from burns, laser surgery, dermabrasion, etc..

Laserfade® contains the same beneficial ingredients as Scarfade® plus a rich blend of antioxidants including Vitamin E, Vitamin K and Co-Enzyme Q-10 – a natural occurring antioxidant already in our bodies. These antioxidants are thought to reduce damage to freshly lasered skin caused by ultraviolet sun damage, air pollution and other environmental factors. Laserfade® also contains a micronized zinc oxide for protection from the sun and is clinically tested to SPF 15.

What are the usage instructions?

Wash the affected area and pat dry. Gently massage a small amount of the Scar Gel into the scar and gently wipe away the excess with a tissue until the area is completely dry and no longer tacky. Apply twice daily in the morning and evening.. May be covered with cosmetic blush or camouflage.
