The dry air of winter can wreak havoc on your skin. If you’re tired of dry, flaky, chapped skin but don’t have the money to spend on expensive creams and lotions at the store, try these homemade skin care recipes. You can easily make these at home for a fraction of the cost, plus many of the ingredients are all-natural and gentle.

Acne Baking Soda Mask

 You’ll need:

  • 2 tbsp. baking soda
  • Spring water

Directions:

Wash face with a mild cleanser first, then mix baking soda with the water until it gets to be a paste-like consistency. Apply to face, leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse. Moisturize and you’re good to go. Try this once or twice a week; not every day.

Seaweed Exfoliating Mask

You’ll need:

  • 1 tbsp plain yogurt
  • ½ tbsp. honey
  • 1 tsp rice flour
  • 1 tsp seaweed powder

Directions:

Mix the yogurt and honey first, then add the other ingredients. Place in the fridge an hour before using so it’s nice and cool on your face. Wash your face first, then apply the mask with your fingers or cotton pads. Leave on for about 20 minutes, then rinse with your fingers in a gentle circular motion for light exfoliation. Be gentle, as you don’t want to irritate the skin. Repeat once a week.

Lavender Sugar Body Scrub

 You’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup jojoba oil
  • 3/4 cup white cane sugar
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E
  • 1/4 cup almond oil
  • 6 drops lavender essential oil

Directions: Mix all ingredients in large bowl, then pour into a smaller container for future uses. Apply body scrub with a loofah sponge while in the shower.

Winter Rosemary Body Scrub

You apply this one just like the lavender scrub above. You’ll need:

  • 3/4 cup sea salt
  • 1/2 cup jojoba oil
  • 4 drops rosemary oil
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E
  • 1/4 cup almond oil

Vanilla Coconut Body Butter

 You’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup mango butter (if you can’t find this, try shea butter)
  • 1/8 cup coconut oil
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup almond oil
  • 4 tsp corn starch

Melt the mango butter in a glass in a boiling pot of water. Add the other ingredients to the melted butter then place in fridge for about a half hour. Whip with hand mixer till you get a frothy concoction. Place in a container for about a cup of future use. Apply like you would any lotion all over your body.

Cucumber Facial Mask

This is a mask ideal for those with oily skin. You’ll need:

  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp mint

Puree all ingredients together, then leave in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. Apply to your face and leave on for another 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water, then follow it up with a cool water rinse. Use an oil free moisturizer afterwards.
